Heading for Hybrid

It’s now over three years since the

first Hino Hybrid trucks turned their

wheels on Australian soil, and in that

time we’ve seen purchases by major

  fleets as well as one-vehicle

 operators. Technology is certainly a

drawcard, but in the case of the Hino

 Hybrids there are definite cost

savings available, even for those who

don’t necessarily spend all their time

 in heavy dense urban traffic.

   Barnett Couriers of Wollongong was

one of the original companies to trial

the hybrid concept, and their first

two hybrids are still in their fleet,

running daily on a return trip from Wollongong to Sydney. Now with over 104,000 km on the odometer, the company is still a firm advocate of the hybrid concept.

Barnett’s achieved a 32 percent fuel saving in its first three months of operation, and today, after three years, the company fleet records show a consistent 25 percent overall advantage in running costs. Back-to-back comparison with a similar sized solely-diesel-powered truck, on the same route, confirmed a reduction in average fuel use from 27.8 litres/100 km to 18.8 litres/100 km.
